Do you fancy walking with Dinosaurs along the Jurassic Coast ?
If you do you are about 180 million years too late!
The Jurassic Coast walk gets its name because of its rich rock and fossil formations which can be witnessed as you trek along this incredible Coastline. The 95 mile walk represents 185 million years of the earth’s history.The dramatic ancient scenery is also part of the South West Coast Path and is a World Heritage Site.
The Jurassic Coast stretches 95 miles from Orcombe point near Exmouth in East Devon to Old Harry Rocks near Swanage in East Dorset .Travelling Eastwards you journey through time and witness three types of geological periods; Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods.
It’s a fairly easy walk with some challenging sections. If you decide to take on the whole walk it will take you about 4 days to 10 days.
Near Sidmouth at Ladram Bay you climb above the famous red standstone cliffs. The views from the cliffs are a highlight of the walk where the sea stacks have been cut so vividly from the laminated red sand stone of the Jurassic age.
It’s worth stopping at Beer a picturesque fishing village with a lovely café on the beach.
After Beer you reach Seaton, a small resort with a long pebble beach and lovely beach huts.
Currently the section between Seaton and Lyme Regis is closed and there is an alternative inland route.http://www.southwestcoastpath.com/diversiondb/24/
Charmouth and Lyme Regis are famous for fossils. Charmouth is world famous for reptiles, fish and insects from the Jurassic period.You can join an informative tour at the visitor centre on the beach.
Just on from Charmouth you reach Golden cap which at 191 metres is the highest point on the South Coast.
After climbing Golden Cap you come to Seatown.
You continue walking up to Thorncombe Beacon which stands at 157 metres where you catch great views again.
Midway along the Jurassic coast you get to the impressive 18 mile long pebble Chesil Beach.
Then onto the Isle of Portland and the seaside town of Weymouth.

The walking through the Isle of Purbeck was tough going in places but again dramatic breathtaking scenery.
The Jurassic Coast walk ends at the iconic Harry Rocks near Swanage.
Swanage is about three miles from Harry Rocks. Finally you reach the iconic Harry Rocks where the Jurassic Coast walk ends.
