Beaumaris is a pretty Georgian town in Angelsey with pastel coloured buildings, a Norman castle and incredible views across the Menai Straits. There are gift shops to browse, pubs and cafes for refreshments, but it’s the atmospheric coastal walking from Beaumaris with its array of wildlife that we enjoyed the most.
From Beaumaris we walked eastwards along the promenade and followed the coastal footpath signs which lead through a gate and into open fields. The path ascends through fields above the castle with viewpoints along the cliff edge. From here, you can see Pennon Point and Puffin island in front of you which is a haven for sea birds accessible via boat trips from Beaumaris. To your right you can admire the panoramic views across the Menai Straits to Bangor, the Carneddau mountains, and the Orme in Llandudno.
Follow the footpath until you join the beach and walk Eastwards along the shingle and rocky shoreline. There are many rocks to sit on, enjoy a flask and soak up the coastal environment, wildlife and the bracing sea air. We continued to walk along the beach for a couple of miles or so before heading back into Beaumaris before dark.
It is best to attempt this walk at low tide when it is more accessible and to make the most of opportunities to hunt for shells and seaside treasures as well as to spot birdlife at this incredible location.
